YouTube & Hulu

Like nearly everyone in this class I've seen plenty of videos on both of these two sites. However I have definitely seen more videos on YouTube then hulu, probably because of more original content. Without rehashing what everyone else has already said, YouTube has millions of videos, uploaded by just about anyone. In contrast hulu really only has content from major publishers.

The video I watched on YouTube was "Friday" by Rebecca Black. If you haven't seen this video yet I'm not really sure if you are missing out or not. On the one hand the song is terrible, and yet it's still addicting. Kind of like a train wreck: you don't wanna stare but you can't look away. What stood out most for me were the comments. The YouTube commenters were brutal. From threats of violence to prayers of hatred to much much worse.

On the other hand, the video I watched on Hulu was Stephen Colbert's parody of Friday from Jimmy Fallon. This video was much more enjoyable. In it Colbert along with a few friends do a word for word cover of Rebecca Black's masterpiece. It is much more of a spectacle. The comments here on Hulu were much more reasonable. People love Colbert and pretty much shower him and his costars with praise.

While it's true these videos are quite different they are still based on the same song. It's interesting to see how different the comments are on the different sites. Youtubes are much more hateful then Hulu's although that could totally be dependent on the differing content.

In the end I use YouTube far more than Hulu. The advertisements on Hulu really turn me off! Even if I were to pay $10 or whatever it is for Hulu Plus I would still have to sit through the advertisements! No thank you TV studios, I'll stick to BitTorrent. And you don't see the real creative user made videos of YouTube on Hulu so why visit?
