Practicum post 3

Hey again, so my video was uploaded successfully and is all the rage online these days. That's not true. I think it has like one view and I'm pretty sure that was me watching it from another computer. I wasn't really expecting many views anyway though, mainly because on a site like vimeo it takes a while to gain followers or contacts as they are known. For example, my cousin is a cinematographer who has had a vimeo account for years now and he only has ten subscribers to his videos. While vimeo is a site where various people may view and comment on your films, it is up to you how much they are spread across the community. For example, one can add a video to a group or share it with a fellow contact. In the interest of time I wasn't able to edit my video exactly the way I wanted to, so in the future I will be more inclined to market more fervently a film which I'm slightly more proud of. In the meantime however here is the link to my first upload on vimeo ( http://vimeo.com/20181402). if for some reason this doesn't work, search the word february in the search bar on vimeo's website and it should be on the first page (the one uploaded 1 day ago by bertkj). Also, here our some questions for tomorrows presentation. If this site eventual becomes more popular or just as frequented as youtube one day, will it fall victim to the same shortcomings? Does vimeo allow for enough conversation to be considered a community, or is it just a place for self promotion?

Practicum post 2

So I've officially had a vimeo account for a few days now! I've really enjoyed browsing the various groups and channels it has to offer. I've seen a bunch of short films, a few homemade (just for the fun of it) films and also quite a few incredible movies created on iphones. I am also in the process of uploading my first video to my profile and can't wait to see how it looks on the site. The video consists of some footage I took of frozen Lake Mendota a few weeks ago. It's not a film with a narrative or anything to that extent, but I felt like it was a good first video to upload because it's relatively short and simple. The only annoying thing is that if you don't have a paid account at vimeo it takes a little while to get your video approved and running on the site. Once it's up I will post the link so everyone can get a feel for what a video on vimeo looks like. Besides that I've been trying to immerse myself as much as possible in the community. So far its been going ok. Hopefully I'll be able to post the link to my video tomorrow and will also include some questions I'll be interested in discussing after my presentation on tuesday. More to come soon.

Practicum-Bert Jarchow

The media-based social networking site I have chosen to follow for my project is the video sharing website, vimeo. Vimeo is a site that was started in 2004 and has since become the portal through which many entertainers, aspiring filmmakers and everyday citizens use to post their content. Unlike similar sites like youtube, it is founded on the belief that quality, as apposed to sheer volume of content, is the most important feature of the site. Vimeo doesn't allow any non original content on the site and prides itself on its relatively small community of film lovers. I have enjoyed watching content on vimeo for a couple of years now, yet have never actually had an actual account until just recently. Being someone very interested in film and media production, having the opportunity to post my material to a website that offers insightful and helpful feedback is something I will really enjoy. The great thing about this site is that while its name carries a great deal of weight within the film and media community, there are no restrictions as far as posting material, and the cost of joining is free. Also, instead of the area for posting comments functioning as an arena for fighting and absurdness like youtube, it gives the creator an opportunity to answer questions, get encouragement and hear constructive criticism in a civilized manner. I look forward to becoming a part of this community.
