I've been doing some research on how Facebook fits in with PETA's organization. My last post looked at Twitter, so I wanted to compare Facebook and Twitter with PETA's online blogs. I already mentioned that peta2 is the most popular blog as it is geared towards college students, who are very internet savvy. I've also already noted that Facebook seems to be the most interactive site for PETA. I noticed people don't usually post something new on the page, but instead comment on articles PETA has posted. These posts include stories, recipes, polls, etc. There are so many comments that get posted very quickly so I think some people's opinons/ideas get lost on the Facebook page. However, if you write something controversial to the cause, people do respond or post counter arguments and get very upset. I have not tried this because I don't want to receive nasty comments. I have commented on several of PETA's postings and haven't gotten comments back to me, but have had some of my comments "liked" by other PETA members. Some people do go back and forth and "tag" previous comments in their responses to the story or issue posted.
In comparing the three different types of social networks, Facebook is the most like a community to me. People interact with eachother on a regular basis and visit the site daily. Twitter is also a great place where PETA is promoted, but people don't really comment on other's tweets. I don't feel like Twitter is very interactive, instead people just read things and then post their own observations or ideas instead of interacting with eachother. I also noticed most of the same people retweet the same things over and over again. The peta2 blog is interactive, but not at the same level as Facebook. When I wrote on the peta2 blog (multiple times) I never got a response back or any of my posts commented on. On Facebook I atleast know a couple people read my comment due to the "likes." peta2 is easy to write on as well, but most people don't visit this site daily. I think Facebook is so active because most people get on it everyday so they see their news feed and PETA's postings will pop up. This makes it easy for people to go to the page, learn about what's going on at PETA and give their opinons on the topics posted.
