Practicum-Ivan Ripley

To start out my next trip into Second Life I decided to visit an interesting locale. I clicked through a bunch of locations and settled on a place called Amesterdam. Once I got there I noticed a drastic difference between the start up area and here, as there were a ton of intricately designed buildings and shops. From what I looked up online this is one of the most well designed "cities" on Second Life and it really shows. It looked like a downtown area of a city with neon lights and advertisements for all sorts of things, like Coca-Cola or Heineken. This was in stark contrast to the initial area where there were only a few small buildings and some tips on how to play written on the walls. Another difference that I noticed right away was that there was always a techno music station playing in the background of the "city" and it sounded like it was an actual radio station.

I was very impressed with the layout of the city and I took the time to go inside a bunch of buildings and look around. One particular building turned out to be a dance club and inside were a couple of people hanging out. I took this opportunity to try out the action commands and made my avatar dance around while the techno club music played and to my surprise there were a whole bunch of different dance moves I could get my avatar to perform. Unfortunately there were not that many people in this particular building and so far I was having a difficult time finding actual people that were interested in having a conversation.

A couple things I noticed on this side of the city was that there were a great deal of "strip club" style venues, with all sorts of animations advertising that you could pay money to see some other persons avatar strip for you. There were a lot of flashy images and even a giant statue of the Alien from the Aliens movies. It kind of reminded me of a MySpace profile in how it was set up. After a while longer in this area I realized that I was for sure in the 'red light' district of Amsterdam as there were tons of porn pictures everywhere so I decided to move on to somewhere new. Tomorrow I plan on checking out the UW Madison campus Second Life area that I heard was pretty cool!
