So I was planning on visiting ChatRoulette because I never have and thought it couldn't really be as bad as what I had heard. But after reading our own classes previous blog posts, I certainly decided against it. My kudos goes out to all of my fellow classmates who braved the awkward conversations and many penises.
Instead of ChatRoulette, and because I don't know what e-dosing is, I decided to look at 15 different MySpace profiles. Through my observations, I was able to draw several general conclusions about the MySpace population.
Many of the users are younger and more ethnically diverse than Facebook. Also, because Facebook originally required a college email address to register, I feel that Facebook still remains a site comprised mostly of current students or more higher educated people. Because of this, I think that MySpace remains a more diverse website than its Facebook counterpart. Author Craig Watkins wrote a very interesting article about this subject called "Digital Gates," where he examined the racial and class disparities between Facebook and MySpace users.
It is interesting what people think should be public information. I saw many provocative pictures and a lot of what should be private information displayed. A majority of online users don't take proper precautions when posting information about themselves online.
MySpace certainly has succumb to the enormous power of Facebook. But some internet users feel a certain allegiance to MySpace, and feel accepted in this online community.
