Blog Post 6: Hulu vs. YouTube

For this week's blog post, I decided to watch the same video on both Hulu and Youtube so I could directly compare the two. I decided to watch "Between Two Ferns" (Zach Galifianakis's series of online videos), because any excuse to watch it for school is a good one. I first noticed that the layouts of the two websites are very similar. There are options along the top of the page, with a search bar and log in option. I use both websites quite a bit, so I'm pretty familiar with both of them.

I searched on both sites for "Between Two Ferns" and found similar results for both. There were several videos and several different episodes of the show. I had decided to watch the Natalie Portman episode (because it's my favorite), and it was fairly easy to find the video on both sites. I clicked on the link for the video on youtube, and I first watched a 30 second advertisement. I also noticed that the advertisement was for a local politician, which I found interesting. The video was pretty good quality and set up like a typical Youtube video. There was a summary underneath it and people could comment on the video below it.

When I clicked the video on Hulu, a new window opened and I was directed to the Funnyordie website (which is the site that "Between Two Ferns" was originally on). The video was about the same quality as the video on Youtube, but there was no advertisement before it played. On this site, there was no summary for the video, and people could not comment on it.

After using both sites to watch the video, I conclude that it was equally funny on both sites (naturally). I didn't find one site a lot easier to use than the other, but I am a little bit more familiar with Youtube, so I may be a little bit biased towards it. I'm not sure if I liked one website much more than the other, but I found myself getting more sucked in to the videos on Youtube because there are a lot more short videos on the page right when you open it. I think that I use the sites for two different things: I go to Youtube for short, funny clips, and I tend to use Hulu for full-length episodes of television shows.
