Practicum Post 2

Hey everyone,

My Internet Users and Audiences project has been progressing very well. My experience on Eons has been evolving and my conversations with members has been more personal and engaging. As of now I am up to 6 friends, and that has kept me pretty busy. I try and follow all of their threads which lead to other threads. By doing this I am able to join in on many conversations on a wide range of topics.

This week, as we all know, Charlie Sheen has been a major story. Just yesterday I was at a friends and we watched the interview again (how could only see it once!). Interestingly, this was a major topic on Eons as well. People had a lot of opinions about the distraught celebrity, such as, "his mind is messed up... these druggies break that families heart. Wonder how dad Martin is taking it..." A difference in the conversation to me is at the end of the post, "wonder how dad Martin is taking it." Here, I would say there is a difference between what college students are saying compared to a mature adult. They would think about the family side, because many of the members have children. Otherwise, just discussing this topic showcases the similarities of topics that old and young people have talk about.

I also had more answers on what the users use the internet for and I would say that there are many similarities there too. What do we do when we need a question answered? We go to Google, and so do the older members of Eons. The internet is a huge space for information and knowledge, and like all of us if you need to know something you look online for it. Also, eBay and Amazon seemed to be important sites for many of the users. One member also likes to cook, so she uses the internet to find fun and exotic recipes.

In addition to the Eons community, I have been researching about senior citizen usage of the internet. As I can see, seniors are definitely closing the information gap; where they are becoming very proficient internet users. Also, many more are using the internet than ever before. In addition, the number one use of the internet is still e-mail. The number one site visited is Google, interestingly followed by Windows Media Player.

As I've learned from my Eon's community friends, is that age is only a number, and they are just as much as a part of the internet as we are. They enjoy it greatly, and what keeps them coming back are the relationships they are able to create on their online template. It really is a nice thing to see!

I'll post again before my presentation on Tuesday! Have a great weekend!
