Blog Post #4

So, I'm not going to lie, I have googled myself before. This most recent search was very similar to the previous times I have looked up myself and reconfirmed that I am not an important person on the World Wide Web yet...Unfortunately, I have found out that my name is somewhat common. So much for being unique, right? Anyways, I found several 'Rachel Cousins' Facebook pages, Twitter accounts, LinkedIn profiles, and yes, several MySpace pages too! I also found out that there is a model from the United Kingdom who has the same name as me. Another problem that I ran into when trying to find myself was that because my last name is also the term for a relative...I found websites and blogs on 'my cousin Rachel' or 'Rachel's cousins singing.'

I was surprised, however, was the variety of links that did pop up simply by putting in my name. Not only did I get links to profiles and websites, but also, YouTube videos and random pictures. It can be a little eerie the amount of information that is provided by similar Rachel Cousins all around the world. In some aspects, I was glad that after browsing through the first 5 pages of the many that Google provided I still did not find myself. Only after I added my hometown did I start to see results of high school competitions or different things I have been involved in.

From this quick little research about myself, I have found that there is no limit to what can be found out on the internet, especially when there is a lack of privacy. Obviously, there are some people that want to be found and other people take more precautions to what is visible on the internet. And as much as I want to be famous, my apparent anonymity right now does not seem like such a bad thing.
