Practicum Post #3-Questions to Consider

The Internet certainly allows for any type of interest group, or in the case of my practicum project, any type of support group. The users who frequently visit and comment on BabyU often share very personal family stories, questions, comments and concerns. Loyal members are very receptive, often offering feedback and support. The community shares similar values, ideas and family lives. In many ways, these internet friendships provide real support and help to users who are struggling with everyday parenting and pregnancy problems.
However, can an online relationship offer the same kind of support a real live support group does? What is the value in sharing with others? Does communication change when it is in person versus online? Is it for the better or for the worse?
