For my practicum project, I was assigned "Support Groups," and I chose a parenting/pregnancy website called babyuniversity.com. The website offers a lot of information, including a wiki and product reviews. I will be focusing on the Forums segment of the website, where members post discussion threads and responses. BabyU has hundreds of different topics, but I have chosen to focus on the General Pregnancy and Parenting discussion boards. I signed up to be a member, and even posted on the "Welcome" thread but am waiting for a moderator to view my first post. BabyU has over 15,000 members and over 1 million posts. Several moderators watch the website content. They also have a sidebar that tells you how many members and guest are viewing the website. The site is very easily navigated and organized, which makes it easy to understand.
Just a quick look at the site, and it is easy to see that writers have their own language in their posts. After clicking on some of the profile descriptions, the most active users are of similar age and family situation. However, I will certainly have to do more research and observation to find out more about these users.
