Blog post 6: Hulu vs. YouTube

I decided to watch the same clip on both Hulu and YouTube so I could directly compare the two. I’m sure you’ve all heard the terrible song and new phenomenon “Friday” by Rebecca Black. It’s pretty painful but Stephen Colbert’s rendition of “Friday” with The Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon makes it much more tolerable.

I haven’t used Hulu very much before because it doesn’t have the shows that I watch but I found it very easy to navigate my way around. Once I clicked on the clip, there was a 30 second ad before the song started. I didn’t really mind though because the quality was great and even when I expanded the video to full screen, it remained very clear. I like that Hulu gives you the option underneath the video to seamlessly click through other episodes and clips of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, along with similar shows that I might like.

When I went on YouTube, I typed in Stephen Colbert + Friday and came up with a bunch of different videos. I clicked on the one with the most views and was fully expecting it to say something along the lines of removed due to copyright infringement. I was surprised to learn that there are ways around the copyright restrictions on YouTube. The person who uploaded this video had it mirrored and the first 40 seconds of the clip are blank. Apparently YouTube only analyzes the first 40 seconds of videos for copyright purposes so this video has not been taken down. There were no advertisements and the clip is actually pretty clear, although when I changed it to full screen it did become more pixilated. Even though the quality of the videos on Hulu is so much better than on YouTube, I find myself spending much more time on YouTube because of the wide variety of content.
