My practicum project is social activism and I decided to use PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) as my topic to focus on. They are the largest animal rights organization in the world and have over 2 million members. PETA focuses their attention on four industries: factory farms, in the clothing trade, in laboratories and in the entertainment industry. One way PETA generates alot of attention from the media is through their "I'd rather go naked than wear fur" ads that feature celebrities such as Khloe Kardashian, Alicia Silverstone, Eva Mendes and many others. I visited their main website http://www.peta.org/ to begin my research about the organization. I registered to join their Action Team. I had to give them my name, address, phone number and email address. PETA must verify their members because I have yet to receive an email with a password or login name. Although I am unable to login, I could still look at the site. The website is pretty easy to navigate. I went to their blog, which features hundreds of topics that deal with animal cruelty, animal rights, petitions against designers who use fur, vegan information and many other things. There are many ways to donate to PETA. They have an online store that sells clothing and accessories that only uses animal friendly vendors. The vendors have agreed to donate a portion of their profits to PETA. Like I said earlier there is a blog where members can interact. They also offer games as another way to interact. I will update my experience with the PETA blog once I receive a login name and password.
