Blog Post #4 ...Google-ing myself

In this exercise, we were told to Google ourselves and reflect on what we find. Of the 10 "findings" on the main Google screen after Google-ing myself, seven of them are actually things that pertain to me, so that's reassuring. The first one was my Twitter account, followed by one on MySpace (I don't have MySpace...?). After that, there was a lot of stuff from my internship at UWBadgers.com from when I wrote things for the Web site. It makes me feel professional. There's also a link to my LinkedIn page as well as my Facebook page--pretty typical.

I took it one further and decided to Google Image myself. Let's just say I hope future employers don't check it out. There are a lot of pictures of me drinking, at parties, etc. I have no idea how they're on Google Images, but I'd kind of like to see them not on Google Images. Ah well, I'm over it.

I think it's really interesting to think about the privacy of the Internet. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc., you can set your privacy settings. But not Google. There, it's basically free reign. If you were arrested, in a newspaper article, in a fight or did something spectacular, Google knows about it and it's searchable. Scary, eh? One thing that really creeps me out is that it shows some of my specific Tweets that I've sent, so anyone with a Twitter can see what I'm saying and to whom I'm talking to. Luckily, I'm very entertaining on Twitter, so they're lucky.

That's all for now. I feel sort of cool that I now show up on Google. But at the same time, it makes me dwell on just how private the Internet is. I'm realizing it's not...at all.
